Does Schoology Detect AI? What Teachers Can Actually See
Schoology has no built-in tool that detects AI writing. PowerSchool's pages for Schoology describe PowerBuddy, an opt-in AI assistant, but no AI detection, so an AI score only appears if your school or district connects a separate tool, such as Turnitin through its LTI app, or Copyleaks. What Schoology can show a teacher is often more ordinary: a PowerBuddy chat log, a Google Doc the teacher owns, and the settings on a locked-down test.
This guide is based on PowerSchool's Schoology documentation and the connected vendors' own pages, checked in September 2026.
Schoology on its own: an AI assistant, not an AI detector
PowerSchool's Schoology Learning product page describes PowerBuddy in two ways. For teachers, it "helps teachers come up with new ideas and create content that is grade-leveled, standards-aligned, and appropriate for K–12 education." For students, it "provides students with a conversational AI tutor tailored to their individual learning needs and grade level." The page doesn't mention plagiarism checking, AI detection or academic-integrity tools.
PowerBuddy is also optional. PowerSchool's PowerBuddy for Learning guide (28 July 2025) says "Schoology customers can now explore the benefit of PowerBuddy for Learning by opting in to AI features." The same guide tells teachers they can "Review the chat logs for all students you have permission to access," and that conversations "can take up to 15 minutes to load into the chat log and are available for 60 days."
That last detail matters. If your school has PowerBuddy switched on and you ask it to write your paragraph, your teacher can read that conversation for about two months afterwards. It isn't detection. It's a transcript.
Turnitin in Schoology
Turnitin's PowerSchool partner page says "PowerSchool Learning and Schoology platforms have a seamless LTI integration with Turnitin Feedback Studio," and that "Once Turnitin has been enabled, Teachers can add a new Turnitin assignment as an LTI Activity in any class."
PowerSchool's own docs show the mechanics. The Turnitin app is installed from the App Center, with "Add to Organization" for a whole district or "Install for Me" for a single account (Use the Turnitin LTI app). A teacher then adds it to a course through Add Materials → Add File/Link/External Tool → External Tool, picks "Turnitin LTI" as the tool provider, and ticks Enable Grading (Using Turnitin as an LTI Tool). Students submit by clicking the tool's title on the Materials page, which opens the Turnitin dashboard, and choosing Upload Submission. Scores entered in Turnitin's document viewer flow back to the Schoology gradebook.
Whether that assignment checks for AI depends on your school's Turnitin licence: Turnitin's AI writing FAQ says only schools that license Turnitin Originality get AI writing detection. The score doesn't show up on the Schoology page either. Turnitin adds that "There is no AI writing indicator or score embedded directly in the LMS user interface"; the number lives in the Turnitin report, which a teacher has to open.
Turnitin's documented limits apply in Schoology just as they do anywhere else:
- Length. Turnitin won't produce an AI score for anything under 300 words of prose, so short-answer homework and single-paragraph responses get none at all.
- Format. Lists and bullet points aren't analysed; Turnitin looks only at "standard grammatical sentences."
- Language. Only four languages are supported for long-form writing: English, Spanish, Japanese and Modern Arabic. An essay in French or Tagalog gets an empty indicator instead of a score.
- Low scores. Results from 1% to 19% appear only as an asterisk, with no number, because of the risk of false positives.
- Judgement. Turnitin's guidance is that the score "should not be used as the sole basis for action or a definitive grading measure by instructors."
Students never see Turnitin's AI indicator or report; the FAQ says they "are not visible to students." What students do see, and why, is covered in can students see the Turnitin AI score.
Copyleaks, GPTZero and other checkers
Copyleaks lists Schoology among its LMS integrations. Its Schoology page says the integration "Detects AI-generated content from ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, and more" and catches paraphrasing. Teachers "decide how much student access they want to grant" and have "the option to download PDF reports and share them with your students." A further "AI Assessment" feature is marked "Coming Soon," with no date given.
GPTZero describes a do-it-yourself route rather than a Schoology app. Its February 2026 LMS comparison says GPTZero "offers API integration" and that schools can "integrate GPTZero with Schoology through Zapier without having to code at all," after booking a demo with its sales team.
And nothing in Schoology stops a teacher from copying your text into a standalone detector. A Schoology assignment with no checker attached isn't a guarantee that no one will run one.
Google Drive assignments: your teacher owns the file
If your teacher uses Schoology's Google Drive Assignments app, this part matters most. PowerSchool's FAQ says of each student copy: "Each file belongs to you, the instructor. It is then shared with the student." Student copies are organised into Google Drive folders by course and assignment.
On your side, you "Select My Document to create your own copy," and "After you submit the assignment, you can't edit the Google file" unless your teacher unsubmits it (student guide). You can only unsubmit it yourself "if the due date has not yet passed," according to the FAQ.
Google's version history help says "To browse earlier versions of a file, you need permission to edit that file." Your teacher owns the file, so they have that permission. They can step back through earlier versions, see who changed what, and notice if a large block of text appeared all at once. That's a record of how the document was built, not an AI detector. For the other ways teachers notice AI use, see can teachers see if you use ChatGPT.
Tests and quizzes: LockDown Browser in Schoology
For tests, Schoology supports Respondus LockDown Browser if your school holds a licence for it. PowerSchool's teacher guide says it "displays the test in full-screen mode and prevents students from navigating away from the assessment or navigating to other applications," and "prevents copy and paste, right-clicking, screen capture, messaging, or printing." Teachers can require it on "tests, quizzes, assessments, or managed assessments (AMP)" by selecting "Require Respondus LockDown Browser for this exam." In linked sections, "All Respondus LockDown Browser settings must be configured in the master section."
The administrator guide adds that "Requiring the LockDown Browser on tests or quizzes does not affect any functionality available to instructors on Schoology." Put simply, LockDown Browser controls your device during the test. It doesn't analyse what you write, and neither PowerSchool nor Respondus describes it as an AI detector. Respondus lists Schoology among the systems it integrates with.
What your teacher can see, tool by tool
| Where your work goes | What the teacher can see | What you can see |
|---|---|---|
| Turnitin LTI assignment | Similarity Report, plus an AI writing report if the school licenses Originality | Similarity, depending on settings; never the AI report |
| Copyleaks | AI and plagiarism results | Whatever access the teacher grants, or a shared PDF |
| Google Drive assignment | The document itself and its version history | Your copy, until you submit |
| PowerBuddy | Chat logs, available for 60 days | Your own conversations |
| LockDown Browser test | The usual test results | A full-screen, locked test |
How to find out what your Schoology class is using
- Watch how you submit. If clicking the assignment opens a Turnitin dashboard with Upload Submission, your work is going through Turnitin.
- Look for "My Document." That button means a Google Drive assignment, and your teacher owns the copy you work in.
- Assume PowerBuddy chats can be read. If your school uses it, your teacher can review chat logs for 60 days.
- Check the test launch page. That's where Schoology offers the LockDown Browser download for a locked test.
- Ask. Your teacher, or your district's AI policy, can tell you whether Turnitin's AI report is switched on.
Keep your own drafts, too. When you're not working inside a Drive assignment, write in a tool that saves history. Google Docs lets you name up to 40 versions of a document. Microsoft Word only tracks versions for documents stored in OneDrive or SharePoint, and with a personal Microsoft account you can go back through the last 25 (Microsoft support). Save your outline and sources along with the drafts. If you're ever accused of using AI, the guide to proving your writing is human walks through presenting that evidence calmly.
SupWriter's AI detector is one way to pre-check a draft. It uses a single scoring model, not Turnitin's or Copyleaks', and different detectors can disagree about the same text, so use its result as a hint rather than a prediction (how we test).
FAQ
Does Schoology detect ChatGPT? Not on its own. Schoology has no built-in AI detector; AI scores come from tools a school connects to it, like Turnitin (which needs an Originality licence for AI checks) or Copyleaks.
Can my teacher see what I ask PowerBuddy? Yes, if your school uses PowerBuddy. PowerSchool says teachers can review chat logs for students they have permission to access, and conversations stay available for 60 days.
Does LockDown Browser detect AI? No. It locks down your device during a test, blocking other apps, copy and paste, screen capture and printing. It doesn't analyse your writing.
Can I see my Turnitin AI score in Schoology? No. Turnitin's AI report is for instructors only, and even they have to open the Turnitin report to see it.
Can my teacher see my edits in a Google Drive assignment? Yes. The teacher owns the file, and Google lets anyone with edit permission browse its earlier versions.
