Kerala's thesis rules: similarity limits and a signed undertaking

India's University Grants Commission (UGC) set the national baseline in its 2018 academic-integrity regulations. Anyone submitting a thesis or dissertation signs an undertaking that the document is their original work, free of plagiarism, and has been checked with a plagiarism-detection tool the institution approves [1]. The penalty levels in those regulations apply to theses, dissertations and research papers, not to assignments, essays or answer scripts [1], and the text never mentions artificial intelligence [1].

Kerala universities publish their own limits on top of that:

APJ Abdul Kalam Technological University (KTU). Its 2023 PhD regulations ask scholars to certify that standard software was used to check the thesis, and suggest 20% similarity as a general ceiling, excluding the bibliography and self-plagiarism [2].
University of Calicut. The C.H. Mohammed Koya Library, which runs PhD-thesis checks, accepts at most 10% similarity in core chapters and 10% in non-core chapters [3].

At the University of Kerala, Malayalam now has a place in postgraduate exams. Acting on a Higher Education Department letter of 17 November 2025, an order dated 9 September 2026 lets PG candidates write examinations in Malayalam for subjects other than languages, choosing the language when they register [4]. Rules on AI use and AI declarations come from your university and department, so read them before any tool touches your coursework.

Malayalam gets a similarity check, not a trustworthy AI score

The plagiarism software that INFLIBNET's ShodhShuddhi programme supplies to Indian universities is DrillBit. Its FAQ says DrillBit supports 15 regional languages, Malayalam among them, and produces an AI report for all submissions [1]. The University of Kerala's Syndicate agreed on 28 December 2023 to adopt DrillBit in place of Ouriginal (Urkund), after INFLIBNET stopped Ouriginal access [2]. DrillBit's own languages page, though, flags Malayalam for similarity checking only; its AI detection covers five languages, and Malayalam isn't one of them [3]. INFLIBNET also notes that regional-language files can show lower similarity percentages because so little regional-language content is available [1].

The international detectors pass over Malayalam too. Turnitin's AI detector doesn't process it [4]; it is missing from Turnitin's Translated Matching list [5] and from Originality.ai's 31 languages [6]; and GPTZero doesn't count it among the languages it fully supports [7].

Our own detector misjudged Malayalam in our 26 September 2026 check: it rated a fully AI-written draft at 71% AI and that draft's default-mode rewrite at 100% [8]. That is why no score appears beside the sample, and why a Malayalam score from any tool, high or low, shouldn't be treated as proof.

Writing notes

Type in Unicode Malayalam, not a legacy font encoding such as ML-TT-Karthika. The University of Calicut library warns that legacy fonts produce garbled text when a thesis PDF is copied or indexed, and it recommends the RIT-Rachana font.
If a search or a similarity report misses a Malayalam phrase you know is in the file, check the encoding before the wording: chillu letters such as ൻ, ർ and ൽ were stored differently before Unicode 5.1, and the Unicode Standard tells software to handle both forms.
Make sure the rewrite is in Malayalam from start to finish. Rewrites can come back with whole sentences in English, so translate those yourself or put your own Malayalam line back.
Read a rewrite's opening and closing sentences against your draft. The opening can come back muddled, and the closing line can lose a condition such as “if used correctly”, turning a careful claim into a sweeping one.

Malayalam questions

No. Turnitin's AI indicator is built for long-form prose in four languages, English, Spanish, Japanese and Modern Arabic, and a Malayalam submission simply isn't processed. Malayalam isn't on Turnitin's Translated Matching list either, so a Malayalam paper isn't translated into English for similarity matching the way a Hindi or Bengali paper can be.

Under the UGC's 2018 regulations, similarity of up to 10% is Level 0 and carries no penalty, while higher levels do. Kerala universities add their own figures: KTU's 2023 PhD regulations suggest 20% as a general guideline, excluding the bibliography and self-plagiarism, and the University of Calicut's library allows 10% in both core and non-core chapters. Confirm the current rule with your research centre before you submit.

INFLIBNET says DrillBit generates an AI report for every submission, but DrillBit's own languages page lists Malayalam for plagiarism checking only, with AI detection limited to five languages that don't include it. We haven't seen what that AI report shows for a Malayalam file, so ask your research centre how it reads one. The similarity check is the part that clearly applies.

At the University of Kerala, postgraduate candidates can, for subjects other than languages, under an order dated 9 September 2026. You pick the language when you register, you may still write in English on the day, and each paper must be written in one language only. Other universities make their own rules, so check yours.
