Using an AI Humanizer on Amharic Text: What to Know First

The national policy. At its 37th regular session, on Sene 20, 2016 in the Ethiopian calendar (27 June 2024), Ethiopia's Council of Ministers decided to put the National Artificial Intelligence Policy into effect, the state Ethiopian News Agency reported [1]. The bilingual Amharic-English policy asks higher education and training institutions to train enough qualified AI experts, gives the Ministry of Education a role in using AI to evaluate student performance and combat fraudulent educational credentials, and says that when AI is put to use, all of Ethiopia's languages and cultures should receive proportional recognition and equal benefit [2]. It contains nothing on plagiarism or on students using AI in assignments [2].

University rules. Addis Ababa University's Senate Legislation (November 2023) treats cheating, fabrication and plagiarism as academic dishonesty, defining plagiarism as intentionally or knowingly representing the words or ideas of another as one's own in any academic exercise [3]. The minimum sanction is a one-year suspension for undergraduates and two years for graduate students, with an XF or XO grade entered on the transcript [3]. The legislation doesn't mention AI tools [3].

The language of assessment. The Ministry of Education's curriculum framework (May 2009) states that English is the medium of instruction for secondary and tertiary education, and describes Amharic as the federal working language and a lingua franca for business, commerce and government [4]. Most essays and theses you submit at university are therefore likely to be in English [4].

Amharic sits outside the documented coverage of every major AI detector we checked. Turnitin's AI-writing detector doesn't process Amharic papers, leaving its AI indicator blank or in an error state [1], and Amharic is also absent from the language list for Turnitin's Translated Matching, which is a similarity feature rather than AI detection [2]. Originality.ai's 31 languages leave it out [3], and so do the five GPTZero says it fully supports [4].

Our detector is no exception. It returned a score of zero for a fully AI-written Amharic draft and zero again for the rewrite, so it can't evaluate Amharic at all [5], and nothing on this page carries a score. That same run explains the missing sample: the default-mode rewrite of our Amharic test draft, made on 26 September 2026, didn't come back as coherent Amharic. It was a single run on a single draft, but it's reason enough to check an Amharic rewrite line by line before you rely on it.

Where AI detection does reach Ethiopian students, it's likely to be on English work. Addis Ababa University's library lists Turnitin as its anti-plagiarism detection tool [6], and Turnitin says its AI percentage shouldn't be the sole basis for action [1]. That caution matters: a 2023 Stanford study found seven GPT detectors, on average, wrongly labelled 61% of 91 TOEFL essays, all written by non-native English speakers, as AI-generated [7].
