How Jordan, Egypt and the UAE handle Arabic, copying and AI

Rules differ by country and by university. Three documents show the range a student writing in Arabic can meet.

Jordan puts Arabic into law. The Arabic Language Protection Law No. 35 of 2015 requires public and private higher-education institutions to teach in Arabic in all fields, except where the education and higher-education ministries decide otherwise [1]. It also makes Arabic the language of scientific research: work may be published in a foreign language, provided the researcher supplies an Arabic translation [1].
Egypt's Aswan University caps thesis similarity. Its council decided on 27 June 2022 that master's and doctoral theses need an academic-integrity “quotation” (similarity) check before the examination and defence committee is formed, with no more than 25% from any single source and 40% from all sources combined [2].
Ajman University in the UAE makes AI opt-in. Policy EP-18, effective May 2025, doesn't permit students to use generative AI in academic work unless the course instructor explicitly authorises it [3]. Any tool used must be disclosed with its name and version, failure to disclose is treated as academic dishonesty, and the listed first-offence penalty for AI-related plagiarism is a zero for the submitted work [3].

Turnitin now scores Arabic; our own detector can't be trusted on it

Arabic is now one of just four languages Turnitin's AI detector scores. Turnitin announced Arabic AI-writing detection on 18 August 2026, in Turnitin Originality and as an add-on for iThenticate [1], and its FAQ lists long-form Modern Arabic next to English, Spanish and Japanese [2]. A report needs at least 300 words of prose, and scores from 1% to 19% appear only as an asterisk [2]. Turnitin's Arabic launch post says the model works on documents in Modern Standard Arabic, calls the report an indicative guide that is never conclusive proof, and says nothing about colloquial dialects [3]. Originality.ai lists Modern Standard Arabic [4]; GPTZero doesn't name Arabic among the languages it fully supports [5].

Research is young. AraGenEval's detection subtask, which calls itself the first multi-genre evaluation framework for Arabic AI-generated text, saw a best F1-score of 0.8641, and its organisers cite an earlier test in which detectors such as GPTZero reached accuracy as low as 30% on Arabic, especially diacritized text [6].

SupWriter's detector is unreliable for Arabic, so the sample above carries no score. Of eight human-written passages from pre-2020 Arabic Wikipedia, six scored 73% AI or higher and four scored 100% [7]. The AI-written draft scored 100%; its default-mode rewrite scored 75% and an aggressive-mode rewrite 100% [7], numbers that prove nothing either way.

Writing notes

The editor has no setting labelled Modern Standard Arabic; its Arabic options are named after regional varieties, such as Egyptian Arabic, North Levantine Arabic and Najdi Arabic. The sample above was a Fusha draft run under Egyptian Arabic, and the rewrite brought in colloquial forms such as بس and مش, so for coursework, restore the Fusha wording wherever it slips.
Compare claims and names with your original. The rewrite above mentions Saudi Arabia, which the draft never did, and it merged two of the draft's sentences into one long run-on.
Use Arabic punctuation (، ؛ ؟) and the Arabic percent sign (٪) consistently, and pick one digit style for the whole document, either Arabic-Indic (٠١٢٣) or European (0123). Lines that mix Arabic with English terms or citations are the ones most worth rechecking.
When an AI draft leaves technical terms in English or coins its own, settle on an established Arabic equivalent and use it throughout. In Jordan, Article 7 of the Arabic Language Protection Law obliges the bodies it covers to use the scientific and technical terms approved by the Jordan Academy of Arabic.
Check which language each assessment expects. Ajman University, for instance, runs Arabic-medium and English-medium programmes and issues each graduate's certificate in the programme's language of instruction.

Arabic questions

Yes, for long-form Modern Standard Arabic. Turnitin announced Arabic AI-writing detection on 18 August 2026 for Turnitin Originality and as an iThenticate add-on, so whether your paper is scored depends on your institution's licence and settings. It needs at least 300 words of prose, hides scores from 1% to 19% behind an asterisk, and Turnitin says the percentage shouldn't be the sole basis for action.

Turnitin hasn't said. Its Arabic launch post describes scoring documents written in Modern Standard Arabic, and neither that post nor its FAQ mentions colloquial dialects or Latin-script Arabic, so a score on that kind of text falls outside what the vendor describes. Unless your course says otherwise, write graded work in Modern Standard Arabic.

AI detectors are shaky on Arabic, ours included. SupWriter's detector gave six of eight human-written Arabic Wikipedia passages, all from before 2020, scores of 73% AI or higher, and four of them 100%. Turnitin itself calls its Arabic report an indicative guide rather than proof, so if a score is questioned, bring your outline, drafts and version history.

It depends on the university, and often on the course. Ajman University's Policy EP-18, for example, doesn't permit generative AI in academic work unless the instructor explicitly authorises it, requires each tool to be disclosed by name and version, and treats non-disclosure as academic dishonesty. Read your own university's policy and course outline before using any rewriting tool on graded work.
