What Is CrossPlag and Why Is It the Weakest Major Detector?

CrossPlag is a plagiarism and AI detection platform developed in Slovenia and adopted primarily by Central and Eastern European universities. It positions itself as an affordable alternative to Turnitin for institutions that can't justify the cost of a Turnitin license.

• RoBERTa model limitations. CrossPlag's detector relies on a single RoBERTa-based classification model. This was competitive in 2022 but has fallen behind multi-model ensemble approaches used by Turnitin and Originality.ai. The model analyzes token-level probability patterns but misses higher-level structural signals that more advanced detectors catch.
• Inconsistent scoring. We noticed that running the same text through CrossPlag multiple times sometimes produced slightly different scores — a sign that the model has high variance in its predictions. This inconsistency makes it unreliable even when it does flag content.

CrossPlag's one genuine strength is its multilingual plagiarism detection for Central European languages. But AI detection is a different problem, and CrossPlag hasn't invested the resources needed to compete with larger players.

How SupWriter Handles CrossPlag Detection

Honestly, CrossPlag is one of the easiest detectors for SupWriter to bypass. The RoBERTa-based model has fundamental weaknesses that our humanization algorithms exploit naturally.

Token-level disruption. CrossPlag's model relies heavily on token-level probability analysis — checking whether each word is statistically predictable given its context. Because CrossPlag doesn't perform deeper structural analysis, this single technique is often enough.

Sentence variation. The RoBERTa model also looks for uniform sentence structure, a hallmark of AI text. SupWriter introduces natural burstiness — varying sentence length and complexity in patterns that match genuine human writing. CrossPlag's model isn't sophisticated enough to detect well-executed burstiness manipulation.

No chunk boundaries to exploit. Unlike more advanced detectors that analyze cross-paragraph coherence, CrossPlag processes text at the sentence and document level independently. This means SupWriter's whole-document processing approach provides even more advantage than necessary — there are no advanced detection features for it to overcome.

The result is a 99%+ bypass rate that's essentially effortless. CrossPlag is the weakest major detector on the market, and SupWriter was built to handle much tougher targets.

CrossPlag Bypass Test Results

We tested SupWriter against CrossPlag in March 2026 using 80 AI-generated texts. Each text was humanized once with SupWriter and scanned through CrossPlag's detection system.

A perfect 100% bypass rate. Not a single text was flagged. This isn't surprising given CrossPlag's already-low 73% detection rate on raw AI text. After SupWriter's humanization, the text is so far from CrossPlag's detection patterns that the model classifies everything as human with high confidence.

For comparison, even basic paraphrasing tools achieved a 73% bypass rate against CrossPlag. SupWriter's advanced humanization makes CrossPlag bypass essentially guaranteed.
